Timbalaye dedicates the second edition of the event to Arsenio Gonzalo (Cuba, 1919-1991), known as Tío Tom, a Cuban poet, musician, singer and composer.
Tío Tom can be defined as a Griot of Cuban Culture, his modesty and simplicity have left an important trace in Cuban music and society.
We want to do hommage to him with some cultural activities included in Festival’s programme.
Tío Tom has defended, through his Rumba pieces, the authenticity and genuineness of Cuban people taking roots today more than ever in the popular identity of his native nation.
Gonzalo Asencio Hernández was born in San Rafael y Hospital (5 April 1919), in Cayo Hueso area. He attended the public school but his life was very difficult, for this reason he began to work very young as shoeblack, news vendor, mason and labourer.
His career as an author began when he was 15.

He knew Rumbas from “time of Spain” and the most famous rumberos of his time: Roncona, Mario Alan, Alberto Noa, Carburo, El Guinero, El Checa.
Rumba Rumba has become his expression of art.
When it was hard to find a job, Tío Tom lived thanks to his Rumba performances because he could make some money enjoying himself.
His voice, his steps, his drumbeat passed through many areas as El Palomar, La Siguanea, El Africa, Belén, Jesùs Maria, Los Sitios, Pueblo Nuevo and last but not least Avana city Rumberas areas.
